Trigun

TV Series

CARL's TAKE: <<<Three out of Four Stars>>>

Summary - Vash the Stampede is the most wanted criminal in history with a bounty of 60,000,000,000 double-dollars on his head. It is said that wherever he goes, towns get destroyed. So in an attempt to curb their monumental losses, the Bernedeli Insurance Agency assigns two of its employees, Meryl Stryfe and Millie Thompson, to seek out the 'humanoid typhoon' and keep him from getting into trouble. But what they find when they finally catch up with him is a red-coated misfit cowboy trying to promote 'Love and Peace', but having a whole planet scrambling to collect the bounty on his head. In time it becomes clear, though, that this loner isn't just surviving by luck, and there's a dark past beneath his smiles and jokes.

Impression - High quality on both ends, but with a middle that leaves you hoping for more.

Review - When I first saw episodes 1-6 of this series I nearly wet myself with laughter. And the first glimpses into Trigun's plot were intriguing. But despite the solid start I felt this show slipped a little in the middle. I was worried that such a promising anime would go to waste. Then it came back with a vengeance in the last 6 episodes, bringing Vash's past into the light, finally revealing who Rem is, and bringing the relationship between Vash and Wolfwood to life. This show comes in and leaves with a bang, and that's why I rate it so highly. It has plenty of humor and a lot of heart, with a hero who's not afraid to be human and fallible.

VERDICT: This is one of those animes that takes a step away from the norm to stand in a league of its own. I highly recommend it.

Sub vs. Dub - this is yet another show I suggest be seen in its original format with subtitles. The voice actor they chose did a passable job with Kaneda in Akira Special Edition, but just wasn't the right choice for Vash the Stampede.

FUNNIEST PIECE OF ANIME AWARD - the first episode is packed with some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in anime. It literally sold the whole series to me in twenty minutes.
